Paint is the least expensive and most versatile tool for achieving a new look in your kid's bedroom. There are numerous paint products available on the market today that offer their own advantages in application, cleanup, wear and color-retention. An alternative to standard water-based paint, natural paint is a product where the pigment is made from organic materials, such as clay and other mineral compounds. There is no industrywide standard concerning the use of synthetic materials in paint labeled "natural." Some companies add synthetic pigments and toxic, organic solvents to their paint. Read all labels carefully before using natural paint in your child's bedroom.
Paint the walls a solid, neutral tone such as white, beige or gray. Prime the walls with a natural primer. Wait for the primer to dry. Apply one to two coats of natural paint, allowing time between coats for drying. Ventilate the room and clean up any spills or spots.
Paint vertical stripes. Determine the width of the desired stripes. You can have metered stripes or irregular stripes. Start measuring from the corner of the room using a measuring tape. Place a small pencil mark indicating the right border of the first stripe. Move the beginning of the measuring tape over to the right border of the first stripe and measure the width of the second stripe. Do this along the top, middle and bottom of the wall so there are three marks, vertically aligned, showing the edge of each stripe. Using the marks and a level as a guide, place painter's tape on the edge of each stripe. Apply one to two coats of paint. Remove the tape and repeat as necessary. If working with two colors, apply the first to the entire wall as a base coat, then paint stripes in the second color. if you want black and white stripes, paint the entire wall white and then add black stripes.
Make a polka-dot or square pattern on the wall. Apply a base color, ground color, to the entire wall. Wait for the paint to cure before proceeding. Use a stencil or template to draw shapes on the wall. Tape the outline of each shape. Fill in the shapes and remove the tape.
Paint a themed mural on the wall. Decorate the ceiling with clouds or stars. Draw a farm scene or other pastoral landscape. Use a projector to apply silhouettes of familiar people and objects on the wall. Trace the silhouettes and then fill in with paint, freehand.
