While a finished wooden table can be an attractive piece of furniture, take it to the next level and turn it into a one-of-a-kind decorator's dream. Add your personal touch, which could range from a small border around the perimeter to detailed pictures across the top and legs. Choose paint shades that will contrast with the color of the wooden table so that the design is sharp and clear.
1 Wipe down the surface with a lint-free cloth. Clean the table of any food debris or dust that could interfere with the paint job.
2 Fill small paint cups with the different colors you will need. Apply your design of choice using a latex-based paint. Use stencils to assist in the application of the design or paint it on freehand with brushes. If using stencils, tape them to the surface with painter's tape. Use a small amount of paint when stenciling so that it does not bleed into the edges. Dip a sponge in the paint and blot it on the surface for a textured effect, if desired. Let the paint dry overnight.
3 Fill a paint tray with a clear water-based polyurethane sealant. Use a foam roller to apply it over the entire surface of the finished table, including areas not covered with the painted design. Apply three coats of sealant, allowing each coat to dry for at least an hour before applying the next one. This will give the table an even appearance and protect your work.
