Most people assumed he was an impressionist, but through his technique and use of colour and direction he was classified as an expressionist. He was one of the first of his kind who used his emotions in his works to portray a narritive of his life like an autobiography in a way. His use of colour linked to emotions.

Van Gogh is considered a Post-Impressionist. He has also been described as a sort of Expressionist due to his use of color to express emotion. He is, in a sense, hard to classify because of his uniqueness.

He started painting in his native land, the Netherlands, and tried a rather realistic approach. Then, he went to Paris to be with his brother Theo and was exposed to Impressionism which strongly-influenced him. He moved to southern France and interpreted it in his own manner and anticipated Expressionism in his final years of life.
