Hi,
can anybody tell me the story behind why John Singer Sargent or Aurthur Melville painted/studied Bedouins for a while? Or why they become popular to study?

John Singer Sargent painted about 2000 pictures and I doubt that there are more than 5 Bedouins amongst them. In fact I only knew the one famous one until you pointed out others. I guess he painted them as did his colleagues because they were interesting and colourful subjects and although he was American he travelled a good amount in Europe and probably North Africa.

Arthur Melville, the Scottish painter, travelled in Persia and those Middle Eastern lands as well as Egypt so many of his paintings are from those jaunts, although he and John Singer Sargent were contemporaries I cannot find that they ever met.
