What inspired Leonardo Da Vinci to create the mysterious Mona Lisa?

Da Vinci made many other wonderful works of art, but one that has caught the mind of many is the Mona Lisa. It is debatable if he was inspired by a woman whom he very much loved, a lady he might have just passed by in the street, or a figment of imagination. Was Da Vinci even inspired by a person? Will we ever know?

Historians have different ideas as to who the actual subject of this painting is, and perhaps no one will ever be able to finally settle this source of much speculation. One of the most widely held beliefs on the topic is that the painting was made of the wife of a rich Florentine silk merchant and power political nobleman, Francesco del Giocondo. Her name was Lisa Gherardini, making her 24 at the time of the first sitting.

Others hypothesize that the Mona Lisa is actually a man in "drag" or perhaps a transvestite. Some believe it is actually a portrait of Giocondo (this may be associated with an alternate name for the Mona Lisa; La Gioconda-which in Italian however, means light-hearted woman), while others claim to be able to prove undeniably that it is of da Vinci himself. Imposing the image of a previously painted self portrait by da Vinci over the Mona Lisa smile, features of the faces align perfectly.

Of course we will never know -- except maybe when we pass over to the other side. It could be that at that time Leonardo will be waiting at the pearly gates and give us his insights on this lovely and historically significant portrait.

La Joconde is important because of the techniques used by daVinci to paint her. He pioneered the use of sfumato to create a unique masterpiece --- the quintessential Renaissance painting.

its funnny cause i was in Paris two days ago and saw it. Its really not that interesting or historically important. the only reason its well know is because nowon ever found out who the woman in it was. Thats the only thing that makes it significant.
