It is an oil painting on canvas that depicts the view outside his sanatorium room window, even though he painted it from memory during the day. It is one of the most popular paintings of all-time and has a permanent spot in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Because of all the problems that he went through involving his mental illness, he had to check himself into the asylum of Saint-Remy-de-Provence, which is where Starry Night was painted. Unfortunately, after leaving the asylum he shot himself in the chest and died a couple days later from the wound.
It is a shame that an artist of his caliber had to die so young, but his fame only grew after his death. His works had finally begun to attract attention from all over the world and he became more popular in death. His style of freedom and independence became more and more prevalent in his works as he got sicker.
