In 1924 Andre Breton, the theorist of the Surrealist movement wrote a major treatise called Surrealism and painting - I think ( and I can't find anything to back this up), that Ernst painting of the same name is an expression of all the subjects that Breton deat with, such as irrationality, unconscious expression of thoughts.
