Walls can act as a huge, blank canvas when it comes to decorating. But painting them is not always an option, such as if your rental agreement forbids it or if you live in a dormitory. Don't leave your walls blank just because you can't paint. There are other ways to decorate them in a manner that suits your personal taste and complements the decor of the room.
Instructions
1
Create a pattern or mural on the walls using peel-and-stick decals. The decals can create a border around the room, an intricate pattern that imitates a hand-painted design or simply introduce larger-than-life characters. Custom decals are available so you can create your own design if you don't like the decals that are already made.
2
Position a decorative folding screen in front of a wall to serve as a focal point. You can paint your folding screen as many times as you'd like to complement any decor.
3
Use fabric to decorate plain walls. Hang panels on a thin wire or rod running the length of the wall, like curtains. Alternatively, cover a large piece of plywood or canvas in your favorite fabric, staple the fabric to the backside and hang it on the wall. Create more than one fabric blocks if you want to cover most of the wall.
4
Hang decorative tapestries on the walls. Some rugs even look nice when displayed on a wall, such as a delicate Oriental rug that you love but don't want to get soiled by muddy shoes or pets.
5
Turn your walls into a gallery of sorts by using removable wall hooks to hang pictures, artwork, posters or paintings. Similarly, mirrors, clocks or your favorite collection, such as plates, can be arranged on the walls. Choose frames, mats or images that complement each other or share a common color, theme or detail, such as using all black frames.
6
Display wall sculptures, such as wrought iron votive candle holders or metal geometric shapes, on the walls. Larger pieces that take up a lot of space will stand out on their own. Plain walls won't detract from the piece, making it stand out even more. Wall sconces are another option.
7
Install floating shelves on the walls, particularly if the shelves have an interesting design, pattern or color. Use the shelves as extra storage with baskets and bins or to display your favorite things.
