How To Value An Oil Painting?

Any way to find out if the painting is worth something? Can we judging works of art by a signature on it?

If the signature in the oil painting is illegible that could be a problem. Because many artists throughout history have worked in different styles, or their works have evolved stylistically over time, it can be difficult to identify an artist by a single work alone.
