An art movement that rose to prominence in New York and the west coast of America during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is characterized by the meticulously detailed, realistic depiction of objects, and technical virtuosity of the artists.
Photorealism evolved as a reaction against Surrealism and Pop Art.
Artists who are considered photorealists include Chuck Close (such as his painting Frank), Robert Bechtle, Richard Estes, Audrey Flack, and Ralph Goings.
The term photorealistic does not imply the painting was done from a photo, merely that the level of detail in the painting is comparable to that found in a photo.
