Velazquez painted in a direct, gritty realist manner. The term "Realism" was not being used yet, but that is essentially what he was. This is in sharp contrast to the Baroque era that he emerged from and why he is a great transformational painter and why he so greatly influenced painters who lived two hundred years later, most notably, Manet.
