And I'll offer you an example: artists in Verrocchio's era worked to commission; they didn't create paintings unless they had been specifically contracted to do so. By the time Monet was working, the whole medieval/Renaissance system of patronage and commissions had pretty much disappeared. Artists painted what interested them and simply HOPED to interest a buyer, who might see their works in galleries -- essentially, retail stores for art.
