I'm looking for the name and artist of a favourite painting of mine. It was by an Italian artist?

I know it was painted in the renaissance period. It is very famous. Here goes the description....
A man in a red robe is sitting at a desk, studying something. He is elderly and schorlarly, surrounded by books I think the floor of the study is black and white check. I'm sure there is an animal is the scene too.
There is a huge arch, and the painting has very deep perspective - and there is lots of scenery in the background. I think this was one of the first paintings to make use of such realistic perspective.
