When sketching the structure of the face, artists often draw the nose in a basic wedge shape. This is a good way to place the nose on the face, but you will need to add quite a lot more detail to fully model it. Observe the subtle changes in plane that occur across the cartilages of the nose, referring to an anatomy reference if possible. They tend to be more apparent in older people. You will also notice that some individuals have very obvious development of some sections of the nose, while others have quite smooth, almost featureless noses—but the tiny differences will still be observable.

Be aware of reflected light when drawing the nose. Often the darkest area of shadow will be just along the ridge of the nose, with reflected light from the face brightening the sides of the nose slightly. There is often also a little reflected light under the nose on the nasal septum. The nose will also cast a shadow, depending on the type of lighting used. Pay attention to this as you place the model, as an unfortunate shadow can detract from the drawing, while a good one helps to describe the form.

ASSIGNMENT: PRACTICING THE NOSE

Draw a page of noses. Draw them from all different angles, and find different types and sizes to draw. Try to draw from life, but use photo references if you need to, avoiding flash photography. Use hatching to model the forms.
