It is essential that eyes are correctly placed in the head. They must be in line with the plane of the face, the same size, and correctly foreshortened if the face is tilted at any angle. Sketching the eyes can be quite tricky, as the shape of the eye can change dramatically as the head is turned. To place the eyes correctly, position the irises first, drawing the upper lid and then indicating the lower, then drawing the pupils and locating the highlights. Artists favor different approaches, depending on their preferred medium. Painters often work from the outside in, structuring the planes of the face and working in toward the eyes. Pay attention to the lines, wrinkles, and shadows around the eyes, as these give information about expression and help to shape the eye socket, placing the eye securely in the head so it isn't floating loose on the face.
