Fish Magic was completed in 1925. As with many of Paul Klee's paintings, it is a mixture of expressionism, romanticism, and surrealism combining aquatics with celestial and earthly characteristics. It is best known for a patch of muslin glued to the center of the canvas. A line from the clock tower to this area creates a collage of sorts, looking as if a curtain is about to be pulled back to display more magical events.
Paul Klee was born in Switzerland to a German father and Swiss mother, so he has been classified as both a Swiss and German painter. He gained much of his training at Munich's Academy of Fine Arts. Klee possesses an individualistic method that is believed to have been influenced by a wide array of art movements. These include surrealism, cubism and expressionism. He even delved into futurism and abstraction. Among his many credits are over 10,000 etchings, drawings and paintings. Mr. Klee died in the country of his birth in 1940 at the age of 60 after contracting scleroderma, a debilitating and painful disease.
