Uses
Chinese visual culture displays images of bamboo as well as the use of bamboo itself. Calligraphy brushes, furniture, musical instruments, and medicine have been made from bamboo. Bamboo was also used as a primitive form of paper. Bamboo motifs commonly appear in Chinese paintings and other forms of art.
Significance in Art
Flora and fauna in Chinese art symbolize various themes. In Chinese paintings, bamboo signifies purity, integrity and humility. Artists and poets have created odes to the simple beauty of bamboo. Artist Zheng Banqiao (1693 to 1765) created many iconic paintings of Chinese bamboo.
Feng Shui
According to the Chinese philosophy of feng shui, bamboo is believed to be able to ward off bad spirits. Place a bamboo wind chime, flute or fountain in your home to create an Eastern aesthetic and ensure only good spirits enter your home.
