Not all Renaissance art was influenced by the classics (Greeks and romans), in fact, we can date the beginning of the Renaissance in the 13th Century (Middle Ages) with the pre-Renaissance painters such as Cimabue, Berlinghieri, Duccio di Buoninsegna and Giotto. All these painters lived between the 13th century and early 14th and in their paintings there is a strong Byzantine influence, far away from the greek and roman ideals, you can appreciate the use of a symbolic gold backgrounds and lack of perspective. Byzantine art, unlike the classic, has no natural reference; it is not based in nature but in the abstraction of form. All art after the pre-Renaissance is influenced by the Greeks and Romans as it seeks to regain the classical ideal in the sense of perfection of form but they also seek to make that perfection human. The art of the Quattrocento and Cinquecentto is a highly idealistic art, unlike the Flemish painters such as Van Eyck and Van der Wayden, which existed at the same time that the Renaissance painters but their paintings lacks idealism and realism prevails, they paint things as they are and not as they should be (unlike the renaissance painters)
On the other hand, all Renaissance works of 15th and 16th century have art and science in it.In the Renaissance is reached the perfection of the technique with resources such as sfumato and Scorzo, which could be considered as the art of these works. In the Renaissance also achieved one domain to the perfection of mathematical and spatial perspective, requiring the acquisition of mathematical and geometric knowledge. Piero Della Francesca is considered the sum of all previous trends and the starting point for everything that came after, he studied mathematics and geometry, and wrote a treatise on perspective. I would argue that his work is summed up all the art and science of the Renaissance. I highly recommend seeing his work.
