Whether you own a home near the ocean, or you live in the mountains tens of thousands of miles away from anything tropical, you can decorate and create a tropical theme in your room, or your entire home. You don't have to live near the ocean to decorate and paint a tropical theme; all you need is an array of the right colors, furniture, and accessories to turn a drab room into a tropical paradise.
Choose your paint colors. Painting your walls a tropical themed color is one of the easiest ways to transform your room or living space into a tropical one. Choose from tropical colors, such as salmon pink, aqua, shades of yellow and orange, coral, or shades of teal and greenish blues. Paint your entire wall or the top half of it and put matching tropical wallpaper on the bottom half of the walls.
Add furniture. The best furniture to put in a tropical home is anything wicker, rattan, bamboo, or couches and chairs with lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen in light tropical colors. When choosing prints, choose tropical prints with flowers, or brightly striped material. Avoid heavy fabrics like leather or anything dark.
Add plants. If you have the living conditions and lighting required to grow plants, you can add live tropical plants to your room. If you'd rather not or cannot care for live plants, use synthetic plants to decorate the room, such as palm trees, bamboo shoots, orchids, paradise spray, or anthuriums. Arrange flowers in a vase and place them on your wicker coffee table, end table, or window sill to give the room a tropical feel.
Accessorize. Add decorative accessories to your room to finish off the tropical look. Choose decorative accents such as shells, ocean themed statues and glass pieces such as fish or birds, pieces of coral, and bright colored vases. Create unique tropical centerpieces with stones, sand, and a glass bowl. Fill the bowl with sand, shells, and stones and add other pieces such as a few stems of synthetic tropical flowers. Place the bowl on a end table or coffee table.
