Children and adults alike enjoy craft projects that decorate plain clay, glass, plastic or wooden pots. Several types of craft supplies change the exterior of a plant pot. Decorate planting pots with paint, tile, stones, marble halves, glass and pictures. Painted country scenes, flowers and whimsical insects are decorative touches on clay and glass plant pots. Decoupage brightens the appearance of clay or dull plastic plant pots.
Adhere small pieces of mosaic tile, broken plates, half marbles, stones or sea shells to the exterior of a clay pot. Start at the bottom of the pot and glue the pieces around the perimeter to the top. Set aside to dry for at least 24 hours.
Cover the work area with a layer of newspaper. Put on a pair of plastic gloves to protect your hands from the sand in the grout and sharp edges in the mosaic pieces.
Mix the sanded grout according to directions. It will be a thick, creamy consistency.
Scoop grout from the mixing container and smooth it onto the plant pot. Push the grout in between the mosaic pieces. Completely coat the topside of the pieces. Set aside to dry for an hour.
Rinse the excess grout away from the container with a wet sponge. Use light pressure and keep the sponge soaking wet. Set aside for at least two hours.
Wipe the mosaic materials with a soft cloth. Clean away any remaining dried grout with a piece of moist terry cloth.
Painted Pots
Paint the entire surface of a terracotta pot with acrylic paint using a square paintbrush. Let it dry.
Sketch a design on the dry paint on the clay pot with a pencil. Tape a piece of paper with a line drawing inside of a glass plant pot. The drawing will show through the glass for a painting guide.
Paint the design in acrylic paint. Use a colored picture as a painting guide for color choices. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
Coat the painted plant pot with a weatherproof sealer if it is to be used outdoors.
Decoupage
Cut pictures from magazines, seed packets, catalogs, calendars or prints on copy paper.
Spread decoupage medium liquid on the surface of a plastic or terra cotta plant pot with a sponge brush.
Smooth the pictures over the wet decoupage medium.
Coat the top of the pictures and the plant pot surface liberally with the decoupage medium. Let dry completely.
