A bedroom serves as a place of rest, rejuvenation, solitude and intimacy. Remember this when you decorate your bedroom. Choose a pallet that promotes calmness and relaxation. Your choice of décor can affect how you feel when you are in your bedroom.

Choose a calming paint color. Subtle colors such as blue, green, pink or purple have a soothing effect, which is how you should feel in your bedroom. Choose a light shade or pastel version of one of these colors for your walls. Consider adding an accent wall if you want more than one color in your room. For instance, paint three of your walls light green and one light blue. Another way to incorporate more than one color is to add a chair rail to your wall and paint one color above the rail and another color below it.

Hang a minimal amount of wall décor in your master bedroom. Clutter, even on the walls, can be distracting and interfere with a sense of calmness. One or two pictures per wall is probably the maximum amount of art you will want to hang. Hang a family portrait so you can drift to sleep with happy thoughts of your loved ones. Consider hanging a picture with an inspiring quote or verse that you enjoy meditating on.

Make sure your bedroom furnishings are functional. A side table with a lamp on either side of the bed is useful, especially if you or your spouse like to stay up and read while the other falls asleep. A side table is also a great place to put a lavender-scented candle or some linen spray. Keep your side tables and dresser as clutter-free as possible to promote calmness.

Choose fabrics for your comforter and curtains that complement your wall color. Make sure your window treatments block out a sufficient amount of sunlight. If they don't, you may want to back them up with a pair of blinds or black-out shades.
