The use of paint color is an inexpensive way to decorate a room. Paint color not only sets the mood of a room but it also affects our psychological and physical health. Once you determine the atmosphere you want to create in the room, choose the color scheme that best suits your needs. Paint colors can be categorized into three categories. Soft colors, which are cool tones, create a relaxing atmosphere. Hard colors, which are warm tones, add energy and warmth to a room. Earth tones can be used to create a neutral and elegant look.

Make a room appear larger than it actually is with cool colors such as blue, green and violet. These colors do not command attention and they create an airy atmosphere.

Choose warm colors such as red and orange for dining rooms and family rooms. Both colors stimulate the appetite and encourage interaction. Red is not recommended for bedrooms as it has been shown to raise blood pressure and increase heart rate.

Use yellow paint in kitchens, bathrooms and dining rooms. Yellow is a welcoming color that energizes a room. It represents happiness and joy. Yellow will light up small, dark places.

Paint bedrooms and bathrooms with a color that is calm and relaxing. The color blue lowers blood pressure and slows heart rate. Lighter shades of purple have the same relaxing quality as blue. Warmer blues, such as periwinkle or bright blues, such as turquoise are recommended for rooms where people socialize such as living rooms, family rooms and kitchens

Add the color green to any room in the house. Green is the most restful color. It promotes warmth and comfort. Green has healing powers and is often worn by surgeons.

Choose neutral earth tones such as beige, brown and gray. Neutral colors are known for their flexibility. They are warm and inviting. Decorators often recommend neutral colors to be used throughout the house, if you are selling your home. Houses with neutral colors sell quicker. (See reference in comments to editor section.)
