Updating old wall tile by replacing it can be an expensive and time-consuming project. As an alternative, you can paint the existing wall tile to bring it back to life. It can easily matched to any color, and is a great way to add a personal touch to a wall. Taking the time to prepare for this project is important in order for the finished tile to last indefinitely.
Instructions
1
Using a commercial tile cleaner, scrub the tile vigorously, making sure to reach every corner. This may need to be done several times to make sure that all of the dirt and grime is removed from the tile.
2
Place a piece of course sandpaper on a sanding block and sand each tile to remove the glossy surface. Make sure to sand every corner and every edge of the tile. An electric sanding machine is perfect for this step. Using rags or tack cloths, clean the tile to remove any dust. If the tile needs to be sanded again, make sure to remove the dust before proceeding.
3
Using a bonding primer, paint each tile, making sure to reach every part of the surface, since the primer is what will bond the paint to the tile. Allow this to dry. Repeat with a second coat of primer. When this is completely dry, use a piece of fine sandpaper and lightly go over each tile to remove any bumps that were left by the primer. Wipe away any dust with a cloth.
4
Paint each tile with an oil based paint that is the desired color. Again, make sure to cover the entire surface with a thin coat of paint. Allow this to dry at least 24 hours since oil-based paints take longer to cure. Apply a second coat of paint and again allow to dry. Several coats of oil based paint can be applied in order to build a strong surface as long as each layer is left to dry in between coats.
5
Apply a coat of clear, oil-based paint to the painted tile for a high gloss finish, if desired. Let this completely dry.
