Chalkboard paint is an easy and inexpensive way to add fun and flair to your child's playroom, bedroom or even a hallway. It allows your child to express himself artistically without destroying your interior walls. Chalkboard paint is easy to apply and can be painted over without difficulty if you choose to re-do the room or wall at a later time.
1
Place a drop cloth under the wall you desire to be painted. Mask off any areas you want protected from the chalkboard paint. If you are painting just a section of the wall, such as a large square, mask off the desired area, using a measuring tape to determine the appropriate size.
2
Pour some chalkboard paint into the paint tray. Pour just enough to get you started---you can always add more.
3
Using the 2-inch brush, paint around any windows and door frames. Or, if you are just painting a portion of the wall, paint the edges first, right up against the tape, with the brush.
4
Using the roller, paint the desired area with the chalkboard paint using slow, sweeping motions from top to bottom.
5
Apply a second coat of paint and then let the area dry overnight.
6
Carefully remove the masking tape from wall.
7
Gather the decorative items you have chosen, such as felt shapes, artificial flowers, large sequins, fabric trim or buttons. Apply glue to the back of each item and stick it to the wall to frame the chalkboard paint. Use a strip of masking tape to hold each item in place until the glue dries and then carefully remove tape.
Be creative and have fun with this project. Children are drawn to bright colors and designs, so keep that in mind while gathering your decorative items.
8
Remove the drop cloth and clean up the surrounding area. Explain to your child that this special wall is for them to draw on and enjoy with her chalk. Spend time with her drawing flowers, numbers or shapes on the wall and then show her how to erase, too.
