How to Color and Paint Fondant For That Professionally Decorated Look For Cakes and Desserts

0 votes
Fondant produces a smooth, even covering over a cake that makes it look professionally made. This sweet, thick frosting is kneaded by hand and will take coloring well. It is mostly sugar, though, and will melt if you try to use a water-based paint on it. Instead, mix your food coloring with alcohol for that professional look you desire.

Drop 10 to 12 drops of food coloring onto your prepared fondant. Mix the food coloring in by kneading it into the fondant. For a marbled effect, only knead a few times. For a more uniform look, continue kneading until the fondant is evenly colored.

Roll the fondant out with a rolling pin and carefully place the round over your cake. Use your fingers to smooth the fondant over the cake. Make sure all of the cake is covered. The fondant will make a smooth canvas for painting on.

Mix liquid food coloring with alcohol to make a paint. Using a water-based food paint will cause the fondant to melt and slide off the cake. Alcohol-based paint won't harm the fondant. The alcohol will evaporate quickly, leaving only the coloring behind. Dip a paint brush into the alcohol-based paint and decorate the cake as desired.
