1
Choose the pattern or image you want to create. Head to a painting supply store or arts and craft store, or conduct an Internet search, to find a premade stencil; or create your own if you can't find stencils to buy.
2
Decide where in the house you want to paint your decorative shapes using the stencil. You can paint a stenciled design on the walls, ceilings or floors. You can also use the stencils to paint decorative designs on furniture, rugs and fabrics.
3
Determine how you want to decorate with paint and stencil designs. Use the stencils for decorative accents by painting a border around the top of the ceiling or utilize a collection of different stencils to create a mural covering almost the entire wall. Paint an intricate stenciled design in the middle of your hardwood floor or use multiple stencils to paint a faux rug that stretches from the sofa across the room to the recliner.
4
Work out your design on a piece of paper using colored pencils, markers or even crayons. Experiment with different color combinations before making a final decision. Take your final design to the store so that the employee in charge of mixing paint can match the exact colors you desire.
5
Decorate the surface or surfaces of your choice using the paints and stencils that allow you to bring your paper design to life. Affix the stencil securely to the surface using special painter's masking tape or drafting tape. Avoid regular masking tape, as it can potentially pull away with the finish still attached to the sticky side.
6
Add textural variety to your decorative house painting design by subtly using rubber stamps or cutting out a design of your choice in a sponge. Dip the stamp or the sponge into paint and press it against the surface.
7
Use a small artist's paintbrush to add depth to your design by adding color shading to it. Create this depth by coloring around the edges of the design with a more intense color than the stenciled section. Create a shadow effect by choosing one side of the design and shading it more intensely.
