Why did monet paint en plein air?

He was an impressionist painter. When you look at one of his paintings, you're actually looking at the scene he saw and from the angle he saw it. Many of his paintings are outdoors, landscapes.

he was one of the Impressionists. it's what they did: the natural light was important to them, and their scenes were merely outdoors.
