How is Chinese culture shown through Chinese artwork?

For example, why is painting a scene of a river or mountains or a forest popular? Is it because of cultural beliefs?

umm... actually it's not really a cultural belief, it's more like they're trying to show a balance in the paintings. You know how chinese people have ying and yang? It's a balance in between the world... it's kinda hard to explain but here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guo_hua

The Chinese artwork is more than just a painting it is more complex than that, the Chinese art work consist of many avenues, it shows culture, beliefs, origin, religion, a way of life during certain periods of time, to tell a story to be handed down from one generation to the next. The beauty of the art work sometimes takes you away from the story. But the stories is the Chinese treasure.

no, it isn't. Why the painting is famous is because of the way the master uses the paintbrush (or "maobi"), and the structure of the whole painting, and how the master uses the ink. The painting does not show a real scene, but a picture in the painter's mind. It also expresses the feelings and thoughts of the painter. That's another reason.
