What are visual elements and compositional elements in a painting?

Hi, 
I'm taking an art class and we are asked to state the visual elements (i think lines, color etc) of a painting and the compositional elements (im not sure what). How do I figure out what these elements are if i'm given a picture.

Foreground, middle ground, background.

 

Visual elements can include; flora, fauna, various types of marks, color, intensity, saturation, shape, line, texture, material, media, medium... It's a big list.
