This concept is the basis of the Brandywine Illustrator/Painters. Howard Pyle, Schooner, NC Wyeth and by heritage Andrew Wyeth. Andrew Wyeth is the best example of abstract realism I can think of. He mastered space as shape.

The thing that they brushed on in this presentation is lighting. In a big way the most important component of a composition. If we look at Mark's still lives of course we see the objects. Why? The lighting. It's the one thing that most people on the forum seem to not embrace. Lighting is difficult but Mark has made it simple at least for still life.
