I'd like to find out if there is and who would be owning copyrights of famous painters? How can I find out about certain artists? Is there a database?

I am especially interrested in paintings from Raphael

those ancient works of art are (contrary to popular belief) not copyrighted.

However, photographs of those works of art are, and permission to use those photographs or to publish your own photographs (if you laughably think you could take a decent one without a studio) are strictly with the guardian of the object.

These guardians (museums, the state) need the revenue from reproductions of these items to survive. If you are planning on profitting from selling images without permission, you are doing a very BAD THING!

BTW. If you read a scholarly book about any of those artists, the locations of the photographic sources will also be creditted.

Contact the licensing department of these museums if you have a business opportunity to pitch.
