The Chinese symbol of the lion is meant to bring luck and happiness when it is used in a traditional dance at weddings, New Year celebrations and other important occasions. The Chinese lion is a larger-than-life character with exaggerated eyes and mouth, and a muscular torso. You can draw the lion for a coloring page for children or as a decorative piece of art. You should emphasize the bold features of the symbolic animal when drawing a Chinese lion.

Draw a medium-sized circle on the paper with a pencil.

Sketch a large, round circle on each side of the top of the lion's head. Draw a thin circle inside each circle. The circles will be the huge eye's of the Chinese lion. Draw one more circle inside of the circle for the iris of the eyes.

Draw a half circle inside of the bottom of the lion's face. Draw a line straight across the top of the half circle. This is the open mouth area of the lion.

Draw two round circles above the mouth area for the nostrils of the wide muzzle of the lion. Add an upside-down triangular shape between the nostrils.

Draw a wide rectangle for the torso of the lion. Add four rectangle-shaped legs under the body rectangle. Erase the top of each leg rectangle with an art eraser to prevent smudges. Sketch in a rounded top where the leg attaches to the body.

Sketch in the large, furry eyebrow across the top of each eye using short upward lines. Make the same furry markings under the chin and over the top lip of the lion face. Draw a thinner row of fur under each eye.

Draw the four over-sized lion paws with rounded toes.

Sketch in details such as the beard-like mane, decorative tongue and the circular, tiered tuft at the center of the top of the head. Add detailed a brocade-like pattern for a collar around the neck of the lion.
