Asian culture revolves around ancient traditions of beauty, art, medicine and cuisine. However, not all Asians share the same traditions. Follow these steps to distinguish between the Japanese and Chinese cultures.

Consider the differences in architecture to help distinguish between Japanese and Chinese cultures. In China, most architecture is based around the concept of walled cities, such as the Forbidden City. In Japan, the architecture is structured around grand palaces.

Look at the differences in Japanese and Chinese food. In Japan, the primary dish is rice, combined with mostly seafood or noodle entrees. The principal method of seafood preparation is either tempura-fried or sushi (raw). In China, the primary dish is also rice, but the entrees are different. The Chinese have a more diverse entrée menu, with several meats (including fish, pork, chicken and beef) and cooking methods (stir-fry, stewed, grilled).

Distinguish between Japanese and Chinese concepts of beauty. In Japanese art, beauty is always linked to the idea of the temporal nature of life. The sakura (cherry blossom) is the symbol of this idea of beauty's fleeting quality, blooming and then wilting quickly, but its beauty remaining in the heart forever. In Chinese art, beauty is linked with the unchanneled, wild part of human nature that cannot be broken. This is seen in the frequent depiction of lions, cats and tigers.

Appreciate the distinctive music of these two cultures. In Japan, the music is traditionally more vocal than Chinese and principally takes its origins from dramatic forms like Noh, Kabukl, and Bunraku. In China, the music is traditionally more instrumental and makes heavy use of the flute and oboe.

Know that in contemporary society, though there are still many distinctions between Japanese and Chinese cultures, there are now more similarities. Both cultures have an appreciation of tradition, family, honor and beauty.
