In America, synthetic paints were already replacing traditional, oil-based housepaints in the 1930s (in Britain this wouldn’t happen until the end of the 1950s). During the Second World War (1939--1945) these gloss enamel paints were more readily available than artist’s oil paints, and cheaper. Pollock described his use of modern household and industrial paints, rather than artist’s paints, as “a natural growth out of a need”.
