the term "kissing" is used when two elements or objects in a painting just touch each other, rather than having a definite overlap or definite space between them. Kissing elements create awkward shapes and negative spaces, which the viewer then has to puzzle out, distracting their attention from what's supposed to be the focus of the painting.
