An American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, born in Augusta, Ga., in 1930. After dropping out of the University of Southern Carolina, he moved to New York in 1949. He is credited, together with Robert Rauschenberg, with leading American art in the 1950s away fromAbstract Expressionism into Pop Art and Minimal Art.
