An Asian-inspired room can be painted in many ways depending on the desired theme and purpose of the room. Dramatic, black and crimson combined can make a powerful statement or use green and cream color combinations to create a more tranquil mood. Use oriental decorations like dragons and cherry blossoms to complete the look.
Solid Color or Two-Tone
In a Zen influence decor there should only be one focal point in the room. If you are using furniture or other décor for this focal point, the walls should not be overly adorned. Paint the walls a solid color or two-tone pattern. Color combinations choices include red and black, tea green and cream, blue and gold, jade and tan.
Two-toned patterns like a blue background can be accented with a gold stripe of paint the through the middle or paint the top half of a wall red and the bottom black. Another option is to alternate colors on the walls using a green and cream combination.
Calligraphy
Paint the room in a solid color and apply oriental calligraphy on top of it in a contrasting color. There are a number of phrases and characters available at cafepress.com. Either do the image freehand or project it on a the wall and trace it on lightly with a pencil. Paint within the traced outline to finish the image.
Single-Wall Images
Paint a blossoming cherry tree on one wall for a beautiful, eye-catching accent. The trunk and branches should be a dark gray or gray-brown. Petals can be various shades of white and pink. Create vibrant petals along the branches and have some appear to be falling to the ground. Create a layer of pink petals just above the floorboards.
For a stronger image paint a Chinese dragon on one wall. This is a particularly powerful theme when a black dragon is painted on top of a deep red background. Other ideas for single-wall images include the yin-yang symbol, an oriental fan, a bamboo forest, a panda bear, Buddha or a lotus blossom.
Stencils and adhesive wall murals can be found online or at craft stores.
