Hatching is a shading technique used in both drawing and painting, where tone is built up through a series of thin strokes or lines that are more or less parallel. The lines can be short or long. How close together they are influences the tone, with closer lines creating darker tones.

Cross hatching is hatching done in two directions, one across the other.
