Why do we call Rembrandt by his first name?

His full name is Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, so why is he not known as Van Rijn?

"Van" means "of" in Dutch and "Rijn" is The Rhine. So, maybe it was such a common name that to distinguish Rembrandt from the many other Van Rijns, he was called by his first name. Just guessing. But makes some sense since he was already famous during his lifetime.
