Munch used loose brush stokes and thinned oil paints for the soft blending of colors, simplified forms, flowing outlines, and deep emotional content of Weeping Nude. He carefully calculated the composition to exaggerate the emotional tension. While stylistically influenced by the Post-Impressionists, what evolved was a subject matter which was symbolic in content, depicting a state of mind rather than an external reality.
